๐Ÿฆ What Is Binance?

Binance is the world's largest cryptocurrency exchange by trading volume โ€” processing over $76 billion in daily trades across hundreds of trading pairs. Founded in 2017 by Changpeng Zhao (CZ), it grew from startup to global market leader in under 18 months and has maintained its position as the dominant force in centralized crypto trading ever since.

Beyond spot trading, Binance has built one of the most comprehensive crypto ecosystems available: futures trading, options, staking, savings products, an NFT marketplace, the BNB Chain (its own blockchain), Binance Pay, and a full DeFi suite. For active traders who want everything in one place, nothing comes close to Binance's breadth.

The fees are industry-leading: 0.1% for spot trading, dropping to 0.075% when paying with BNB (Binance's native token). By comparison, Coinbase charges 0.4โ€“0.6% for standard trades. For high-volume traders, this fee difference compounds into significant savings.

โš ๏ธ US Traders: Binance.com is not available in the United States due to regulatory restrictions. US-based traders should use Binance.US (a separate, more limited platform) or consider Coinbase or Kraken as alternatives.

๐Ÿ’ก CryptoToolsHQ Take: Binance is the best exchange for active traders outside the US. The fee structure, coin selection, and feature depth are unmatched. For beginners or US-based traders, Coinbase is a better starting point due to its simpler interface and regulatory compliance.

"Binance is the only exchange I use for active trading. The fees are genuinely the best available โ€” on my trading volume the difference vs Coinbase saves me thousands per year. The platform can feel overwhelming at first but once you learn the layout it's incredibly powerful. The liquidity on all pairs is unmatched."

"Best exchange for accessing smaller altcoins that aren't listed anywhere else. The staking products are great for earning yield on assets I'm holding long-term anyway. Docked a star for the regulatory uncertainty โ€” the DOJ situation was concerning even though they eventually resolved it. Still my primary exchange but I keep most holdings in cold storage."

"Too complex for beginners. I started on Coinbase which was much easier, then moved to Binance for the lower fees once I knew what I was doing. The interface has improved but it's still not beginner-friendly. If you're just starting out, Coinbase first then migrate to Binance when you're comfortable."

โ“ Frequently Asked Questions
Is Binance available in the US?
Binance.com is not available to US residents due to regulatory restrictions. US traders have two options: Binance.US โ€” a separate, more limited platform designed for US compliance โ€” or alternative exchanges like Coinbase or Kraken. Binance.US has fewer coins and higher fees than Binance.com but is fully regulated for US use.
Is Binance safe after the 2019 hack and 2023 DOJ settlement?
Binance has addressed both incidents. The 2019 hack resulted in $40M lost โ€” fully covered by Binance's SAFU (Secure Asset Fund for Users) emergency reserve. No users lost funds. The 2023 DOJ settlement involved regulatory violations (not a hack) and resulted in a $4.3B fine and leadership changes. Binance now operates under a compliance monitor. Treat Binance like any exchange โ€” only keep what you need for active trading, store long-term holdings in a hardware wallet.
What is BNB and do I need it?
BNB is Binance's native cryptocurrency. You don't need it to use Binance, but holding BNB in your Binance account and enabling the fee discount option reduces your trading fees by 25% (from 0.1% to 0.075%). For frequent traders this adds up significantly. BNB is also used for gas fees on BNB Chain and has its own ecosystem of DeFi applications.
Binance vs Coinbase โ€” which should I use?
Choose Binance if you're outside the US, want the lowest fees, trade frequently, or need access to a wider range of altcoins. Choose Coinbase if you're US-based, are a beginner who values a simpler interface, or prioritize regulatory clarity. Many experienced traders use both โ€” Coinbase for fiat on/off-ramping and compliance, Binance for active trading.
